CAPTAIN'S FIREPIT

by Marty Byers

Mary brought up several good points in last month's newsletter. Does Clann Tartan fold up its tents and head down separate roads? Does it take the left fork and move on to be a camp group with no military? Or, do we try…really try, to preserve that point which drew most of us in.

I, for one, am going to do everything I can to keep Col. Gaffney’s Regiment of Pike and Shott intact.

We can rebuild the group and maybe become strong enough, again, to win back places at various, well paying events. But, to do this we do need more members.

But, how are we going to get the new members if no-one is willing to do the recruiting. Sitting around, in the grass, chatting with ourselves and not noticing the patrons approaching camp is a VERY GOOD way to push them away. And, no-one manning a demo, when the public is around is the same thing as saying we don’t want to be there.

This season, it is my goal to keep my military group active during public hours. We will be having corporal drills, musket drills, mortar drills and sword drills. Not just demonstrations, but drills that the public can watch. We will be doing the demos as scheduled, but the drills are what helps draw the people in. Then we really start the recruiting.

Recruiting is vital for the survival of Col. Gaffney’s Regiment of Pike and Shott, as well as for Clann Tartan. For, without good paying events, we cannot meet our static bills and then we must shut down.

I do agree with Mary, that we give this till the November elections and then we decide which direction we must take.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Baldwin–Woodville, Wisconsin, Friday, May 4

At this event Clann Tartan gives a hundred and ten eighth-graders what they’ve spent years waiting for: 17th-century Things that Go Bang. Jake Cimino, who teaches World History at the junior high school in the Baldwin & Woodville, Wisconsin, school district, wants his students to get hands-on experience of history and to see what it is that historians do. Clann members oblige by spending the day explaining their character's role in Colonel Gaffney’s Regiment to groups of ten students as they make their way around the encampment. It's a long day—the school invites members of the public to show up once school hours conclude—but Jake says his students are almost all very engaged with the goings-on, especially when the muskets or mortar get fired. Here’s the school’s Web page for our host: <http://www.bwsd.k12.wi.us/middle/teachers/jcimino/SitePages/Home.aspx>.

Besides offering a demonstration of your choice, Clann members can help with food preparation and traffic direction during the school day, and with setup on the school grounds the preceding evening. Sleep in your own bed if you like, as Woodville is an hour or an hour and a half from the Twin Cities. Students begin visiting the encampment at 9:00 or 9:30 on Friday morning, with an hour for lunch at noon. We plan to close around 6 p.m., then tear down and head for home. Contact staff if you have questions, and please watch your e-mail for further information, such as times for loading and setup. And if you have any questions you think students would benefit from asking your character, please let staff know—Jake makes a list for them just in case they run out of ideas. Thanks!

Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games, Saturday, May 19

Mark your calendars! Saturday, May 19, Clann will be participating in the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games. Here's the website: http://www.mnscottishfair.org/.

We can camp Friday and Saturday nights, although the fair is at the Dakota County fairgrounds in Farmington, only about a half-hour drive from the center of the cities, so it's also very easy to day-trip. There are flush toilets and showers on the grounds and lots of free parking. This was a really great event for us over the years.

Board and Staff Minutes

Clann Tartan Board Meeting, Feruary 21, 2012

Present were Marty, Bruce, Karen, Mary, David, Laura, and Mia.

Mary asked to have her remarks specified more clearly in the Members'
Meeting minutes. Other corrections had been made by email. Minutes
were passed as corrected.

Vice President's report; the trifold brochures are still pending.

The treasurer had no report.
Secretary, no report.
Quartermaster, no report.
Camp rep, no report.

The Big Island trade fair went well. So did Ramble.

We talked about adding Waulking to Fargo; it was too late to do anything
this year.

We have no reps for Tartan Day.

Lisa has been pursuing the contract for Siege of Woodville; Mia should
get in touch with her.

We discussed Big Island's offer for this year. Mia is to make a
counter-offer.

Suzie Grudum is the event co-ordinator for Mankato History Fair. They
are adding Wednesday as a third school day.

Old business:

Musket; no progress.
Marty will ask Don Chesney about the musket he has.
The quartermaster is working on kiddie pikes and wooden guns.
Mia is to find out what she can about the owner of the Facebook page.
She will also ask Bob O'Rourke if it might have been Ellis's.

Repairs. We need trailer straps fixed, the pike heads moved, and more
leather grommets for the tents. Marty will ask Staff.

We should bring push brooms to Spring cleaning; the garage apron is very
dirty.

Rachel Hadley is to be our new sutler.

We discussed pub night. Should we change it to an earlier time? 7:00
seems late for dinner. Or, a different day of the week?

There is a broken key stuck in the Garage door. Marty is going to fix it.

When it rains water runs in under the Garage door; we have to be careful
what we leave on the floor.

The Muster Committee needs to meet.

Mary has invited the Board to meet at her office, 1053 Grand Ave, Suite
104, in St. Paul. This will begin in April.

Respectfully submitted,

Mia McDavid
Secretary

Drill

As the good/better weather is showing itself a wee bit early this spring, I am announcing the start of drill.

In order to be the best at what we do, we need to practice.

Drill will include the proper and safe use of the pike, musket and mortar.

We need to be able to work as a single unit, but I will work with smaller groups as needed. And, we will need to be able to combine the groups into a single formation at events.

Everyone needs to know what is going on with each piece of equipment, so they can interpret, while the public drills are in progress.

I am scheduling the first drill for April 21, 2012, 10:00am. Location: 709 E. Minnehaha, St.Paul

If this is not a good time for you, please let me know and I will see what I can schedule.

Event Schedule:

Hello all,

The following is a list of the dates of the events that are currently on the schedule for this year. The staff has met and decided to keep this running list of events in the newsletter to give you a chance to get an idea of what is going on this season as well as keep you updated to changes in the schedule.

The column titled status will include the following information.

Tentative- this means that an event organizer or Clann has expressed a strong enough interest in doing this event that it warrants reserving space on the calendar for the event.

Pending- this is the next stage of an event. This means that the Contracts Administrator has entered serious discussion about Clann doing an event but we are still not committed to the event. You should however if possible think about whether or not you may be able to attend this event.

Scheduled- this level means that the board and staff have approve the event and we are committed to providing manpower to making the event happen. When an event is assigned this level please let the HCF know as soon as possible if you can or can not attend this event.

Canceled- This means that for various reasons an scheduled event has been removed from the current season. We will try and give as much notice as we can prior to canceling an event.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact staff regarding this matter

Thanks,
Your Staff
