Road Trip Update

The potential road trip to St Augustine FL was approved along with financial aid by the members in attendance at the November 7th members meeting. The trip is in March and transport can be via air, train or van.

Airfare quoted in early November was $356 round trip. Three nights lodging assuming quad occupancy is approx $94 and estimated $25 for shuttle service between Jacksonville and St Augustine brings total to $475 per person for transport and lodging. Trip would last four days and food would be extra.

Train would be $390 plus two nights lodging at $62 plus above shuttle service would total $477 per person. Trip would last seven days and food would be extra. Downside to train, four night would be spent in train lounge cars. A plus to the train is layovers in Washington and Chicago give opportunity for added excursions.

Van would be about $445 per person for transport and four nights lodging. Trip would last six days and assumes eight people to get the van share down. Costs go up if fewer than eight share the cost. Also assumes two nights in the van while driving straight through.

All of the possibilities have some plus and minuses. Food would vary greatly and is not included in any of the proposals. I estimate that food would be from $25 to $50 per person per day.

The board planned to take up the issue of financial aid at its meeting on November 17th but was not able to do so because of lack of a quorum. An answer will be announced as soon as possible.

*First Footing/Airing of the Tartans*

Once again we will celebrate Hogmanay with a progressive dinner on New Years Day. For our newer members, on New Years Day, which is a major holiday in Scotland, we adapt the Scottish traditions of Airing of the Tartans and First Footing. We gather at noon in Augsburg Park in Richfield to lay out our plaids for airing (a tradition that predates polyester blends that can go in the washing machine) and a bit of marching to show how impervious we are to cold weather. This is followed by a progressive dinner, in which each course is at a different house.

_We have houses for First Footing!_

We will see Shea Marie Hermes for appetizers at her house, 720 Stewart Avenue, Saint Paul, Cate Hesser and Laurie Dickenson for soups at 1239 Charles Ave, St. Paul, and once again Yoders for main course, and Mill City Hornworks' studio (David Vavreck) for dessert. Again this year we are asking that persons bring an index card listing ingredients for the dishes they bring. Some people have food allergies or sensitivities or for other reasons have to be careful what they eat; providing such a card can prevent any amount of asking "Who made this? What's in it? I hate to bother you but I can't eat . . ." For some of us this is life and death, so please help out here. Maps to the locations are in the back of the newsletter. Please RSVP (That means "say if you are coming and for which courses") and indicate what you are bringing; Please RSVP to Mia McDavid mia_mcdavid@comcast.net, 651-490-1842.

Board Elections Saturday Feb 6th 2010.

The next members meeting will be held at noon on Saturday February 6, 2010 at the Lake Hiawatha Neighborhood Center. The center is located at 2701 E 44th St, Minneapolis MN. This is where we have our first and third Wednesday dance practices. All members are encouraged to attend. Issues to be addressed are the 2010 show season, the 2010 budget and the election of some board members.

We will be electing the following positions: President, Treasurer and Camp Representative. The current treasurer has announced his willingness to run again, the president has not yet decided and the camp rep position is expected to be vacant. The board positions are for a two year term and next year in Feb 2011, we will be electing the other four offices. If you are interested in running and want more information, consult the manual for the listing of duties and responsibilities for each office and talk to any of the current or former position holders. The board has monthly meetings that last about 1.5 hours. They are currently held on the third Tuesday of the month, but the future schedule will be set by the new board.

Gaffneyis Got Talent

When I first joined Gaffneyis, every year or so the newsletter came with a list of what different members make - clothing, leather goods, whatever.

We are putting together such a list of in-house talent. If you wish take advantage of this free advertising, please let David know that you want to be on the list, along with what you make or can help others make.

Thanks.

Road Trip

Clann has an on-again, off-again tradition of biennial major trips. Two years ago, the planned trip to Philadelphia got cancelled. But four years ago, ten members went to Philadelphia for a Seige of Stralsund reenactment. They participated with many other groups from up and down the east coast. The event was staged in Fort Mifflin, a French and Indian era fort that is walled similarly to a 17th c European town. The participants also took in some sightseeing in historic Philadelphia. In prior years the group has gone to Maryland and Virginia for other battle reenactments.

One proposal for a future trip was to head south to meet with a group from Texas. Lisa Gillstrom McCanna has the details on the Texas group. This is only one possibility, if you know of other likely events that should be considered, please get the details, including dates and location to staff. staff@clanntartan.org Staff needs to get any proposals so they can decide on feasibility and worth before bringing it to the board. The board then needs to decide on the financial aspect. Please get any ideas to staff as soon as possible, be sure to include as much pertinent information as is available.

Another possibliity is a trip to St Augustine Florida in either January for a muster type event with a local reinactor group http://www.floridalivinghistory.org/ or in early March to participate in a battle reinactment of Searls raid. http://www.getaway4florida.com/events/calendar/moreinfo.php?Event_ID=23117 The reinactment is a brief Saturday afternoon event so we would have lots of time to study the rich historical past of the area. If this sound interesting and you want to consider going, please contact David Vavreck.

Gaffneyis Glee Club

Good People
We are in the process of forming a more advanced song gathering. The focus will be on catches, rounds, and freeman's songs. These types of part songs were tremendously popular across class lines in our period.

Please contact your music chair, me, to express your interest, and to let me know what evenings would work best for you. And if you can host.

I am thinking maybe twice a month, but you can vote on that, too.

I will set it up for the day(s) with the most votes.

And if you have a better name for it than Gaffneyis Glee Club, I am all ears. It does have a nice ring to it, though.

Those who would like instruction, inspiration, or just to come out and play are welcome at the Ellis O'Rourke's on the Second Sunday of the month at 2:00 PM, provided there is no conflict with other Clann events. Call Ellis (651-238-5427 ), Diana Steben (651-489-2881), and Mia McDavid (651-490-1842) for more information about Fiber Guild activities, including wool spinning, weaving, and dying. Historic Site

Clann Tartan has our own historic site near Duluth MN. Dun Gowan is an ongoing project, which is the site of Gaffneyis Annual Tactical in July. We are finishing the fort and beginning the construction of a village this year. Contact David Vavreck at 612-378-1973 or baethan1630@yahoo.com for further information, or to volunteer to help.

Drill

Because of the upcoming Holiday madness, the military drills scheduled for November 28th December 26th are both cancelled. The Captain expects that his men will still be fit and ready at The Airin' of the Tartans on New Years Day!

Drill location is Minnehaha parkway green, 12th Av S at Minnehaha Parkway.

Event Schedule:

Hello all,

The following is a list of the dates of the events that are currently on the schedule for this year. The staff has met and decided to keep this running list of events in the newsletter to give you a chance to get an idea of what is going on this season as well as keep you updated to changes in the schedule.

The column titled status will include the following information.

Tentative- this means that an event organizer or Clann has expressed a strong enough interest in doing this event that it warrants reserving space on the calendar for the event.

Pending- this is the next stage of an event. This means that the Contracts Administrator has entered serious discussion about Clann doing an event but we are still not committed to the event. You should however if possible think about whether or not you may be able to attend this event.

Scheduled- this level means that the board and staff have approve the event and we are committed to providing manpower to making the event happen. When an event is assigned this level please let Julie know as soon as possible if you can or can not attend this event.

Canceled- This means that for various reasons an scheduled event has been removed from the current season. We will try and give as much notice as we can prior to canceling an event.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact staff regarding this matter

Thanks,
Your Staff
