Give Us Shelter!!!

Our good friend Jim, who has been so kind as to rent his garage to us for the past umpty-many years, will no longer be able to do so. He has need for it, and has asked us to get out by March.

We therefore stand in urgent need of cheap storage for our trailer and kit.

We ask each member, please, to ask around about a garage-sized space that might be for rent. It needs to be reasonably reachable from the central Metro, where most of our members live. If you come across anything plausible, please email Bruce Yoder (bruceyoder@juno.com) or call him at 612-825-4519.

Thank you.

Tartan Day!!!

Every year we join with the Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans to celebrate our Scottish heritage. We march in the parade and fire a musket salute.

Tartan Day is being held Saturday April 4. We will gather at 2:30 at the foot of the capitol mall and march up to the capitol steps for a program starting at 3:00. The inclement weather backup plan is to gather in the rotunda. We will be firing our muskets as part of the program, though not in the rotunda.

Watch this space for further information.

Road Trip

Clann has an on-again, off-again tradition of biennial major trips. Two years ago, the planned trip to Philadelphia got cancelled. But four years ago, ten members went to Philadelphia for a Seige of Stralsund reenactment. They participated with many other groups from up and down the east coast. The event was staged in Fort Mifflin, a French and Indian era fort that is walled similarly to a 17th c European town. The participants also took in some sightseeing in historic Philadelphia. In prior years the group has gone to Maryland and Virginia for other battle reenactments.

One proposal for a future trip was to head south to meet with a group from Texas. Lisa Gillstrom McCanna has the details on the Texas group. This is only one possibility, if you know of other likely events that should be considered, please get the details, including dates and location to staff. staff@clanntartan.org Staff needs to get any proposals so they can decide on feasibility and worth before bringing it to the board. The board then needs to decide on the financial aspect. Please get any ideas to staff as soon as possible, be sure to include as much pertinent information as is available.

Bruce

A lot of valuable information is in the current Clann Tartan Manual.

GAFFNEY'S SUTLER SEEKS WARES

Our sutler, Heidi Viar, is looking for items made by members to sell at her table. We hope that, by offering a variety of interesting wares, we can encourage the public to stop, peruse, and purchase. If you are interesting in selling your spinning, knit caps or stockings, beadwork, bonework, woodwork, we will display them, watch them, accept money for them, and accept a 10% cut for Clann.

You can either bring your goods to Heidi at events, or entrust them to her beforehand. We ask that items be small and not terribly fragile if Heidi is to transport them.

Thank you for your support of Clann Tartan.

Board Minutes

Clann Tartan Board Meeting, January 20, 2009

Board Members Present: Julie Yoder, Bruce Yoder, Glenn McDavid, Cate Hesser, Sean McCanna, Marty Byers , Betsy Bolton

Staff Present: Mia McDavid, Lisa Gillstrom McCanna,

Minutes of the December meeting accepted as corrected.

Reports

VP: No report.

Secretary: Reported on the Quarterly meeting of the Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans, of which we are an associate member.

Treasurer: Payment for Ren Faire is in. The total deficit looks like it will be less than expected. We have about $7700 in the bank.

Quartermaster: The new tires for the trailer have been paid for. QM will get them mounted.

Camp and Company Reps: Nothing to report.

Music Guild: Going well. Nothing extraordinary.

Dance Guild: Going well. Nothing extraordinary.

Fiber Guild: Four people at the last meeting!

Sword Guild: Thinking about two practises per month, one in Baldwin.

Historic Site: Plans for the cottage have been prepared.

Upcoming events

January Drill: At USMC site. 4th Saturday, noon.

Board Elections: See New Business.

Scottish Ramble: Feb. 14-15. Scheduled. We will be taking a pay cut in return for having an ad in the program. Laura is working on this. Lisa will follow up. Bruce suggested that we add "Reenactors wanted!" to the text so it can serve for recruiting as well as marketing.

Albert Lea Fair: Also Feb. 14-15. We will have some people there.

Moorhead: March 14. Indoor event.

Tartan Day: No specifics yet. [Update: Eric Ferguson has obtained information:

.... Saturday April 4. The capitol program starts at 1:00, and we're doing the usual. There a dinner/program that evening at O'Gara's starting at 5:00. We're asked to show up to add color, but there's nothing specific we're being asked to do.]

Charles City: No information yet.

Woodville: We will want posters and flyers, and an ad in the newspaper.

Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games: Mary has information. Lisa will get in touch with Liz Michaelson. She (Lisa) should be our primary contact for this show as well as the others.

Twig: No information yet.

Muster: Staff will contact Jack about possible dates.

Pioneer Village: Nothing yet.

White Oak: We did not have an adequate presence there on the school day last year. Because of the low attendance and the distance staff may recommend that we drop the show.

Aberdeen SD: September. Really outside of our travel radius, but the pay looks good. Lisa proposed some measures to mitigate the travel hardship.

Hudson: September event at the Presbyterian Church. This may conflict with the Aberdeen event. We can call the church and find out when "Rally Sunday" is this year.

We have 16 events planned for the year, even without Big Muddy (Winona). That is two events per month during the "season".

Old Business

Garage: We are attempting to contact Jim about whether we still need to be out by 3/31. No leads on a new place in the Metro yet, but there is a possible fall back option in Baldwin. We can put a "garage wanted" ad in SNIM.

New Business

Staff Budget: The proposed Staff budget was discussed. It seems to be generally OK. Bruce will prepare an overall budget proposal for the Annual Meeting.

Annual Meeting/Board Elections: Lake Hiawatha is busy all day on Feb. 7. We will meet at the Yoders'. The positions of Vice President, Secretary, Company Representative, and Quartermaster are open. Heidi Johnson has announced her candicacy for Secretary. There are no announced candidates for the other positions.

Drill

Hey, everyone! Our stalwart Corporal, Mike Eastling, is also a real-life corporal at Fort Snelling, and has permission to get us into an indoor drill space for December drill!

YAY, MIKE!!!

We can haz muskets! We can haz warm fingers and toes! We can haz young military men watching and maybe we hope participating!!!!!

After this we will drive back to Yoders' to work on costume, character, history, leatherwork, or whatever the mood takes us. Tea, hot chocolate, good company and shared skills. Drill will conclude at 4:00.

This will be so great!!!

Here is what Mike says about the location:

6400 Bloomington road St Paul MN 55111-4002.

From the north, take 35E south to 110 west, merging onto 55 and taking the exit for bloomington road (keep to right lane and you'll hit it easy enough) there's a stop sign at the end of the exit, the historic site straight take a right at the stop sign, golf course will be to the left as you go to the last building on the right.

From the west, take 494 (or 62, depending on preference) from 494 keep to the right following the signs for bloomington road, keep to the right following 5, and you'll reach the same exit as from 110 to bloomington road.

Google the address and it points you right there...GoogleMaps works best so far that I've seen, they're actually accurate for our office.

If you've need of anything better, or want to do a drive through to see go ahead, there's minor security, on the building itself...but when we have drill there, I'll open the bay doors for those to come in w/o worrying about getting locked out or waiting for someone to open the door for them.

Michael

Event Schedule:

Hello all,

The following is a list of the dates of the events that are currently on the schedule for this year. The staff has met and decided to keep this running list of events in the newsletter to give you a chance to get an idea of what is going on this season as well as keep you updated to changes in the schedule.

The column titled status will include the following information.

Tentative- this means that an event organizer or Clann has expressed a strong enough interest in doing this event that it warrants reserving space on the calendar for the event.

Pending- this is the next stage of an event. This means that the Contracts Administrator has entered serious discussion about Clann doing an event but we are still not committed to the event. You should however if possible think about whether or not you may be able to attend this event.

Scheduled- this level means that the board and staff have approve the event and we are committed to providing manpower to making the event happen. When an event is assigned this level please let Julie know as soon as possible if you can or can not attend this event.

Canceled- This means that for various reasons an scheduled event has been removed from the current season. We will try and give as much notice as we can prior to canceling an event.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me regarding this matter

Thanks,
Lisa Gillstrom McCanna
