ANNOUNCEMENTS

Baldwin–Woodville, Wisconsin, Friday, May 4

At this event Clann Tartan gives a hundred and ten eighth-graders what they’ve spent years waiting for: 17th-century Things that Go Bang. Jake Cimino, who teaches World History at the junior high school in the Baldwin & Woodville, Wisconsin, school district, wants his students to get hands-on experience of history and to see what it is that historians do. Clann members oblige by spending the day explaining their character's role in Colonel Gaffney’s Regiment to groups of ten students as they make their way around the encampment. It's a long day—the school invites members of the public to show up once school hours conclude—but Jake says his students are almost all very engaged with the goings-on, especially when the muskets or mortar get fired. Here’s the school’s Web page for our host: <http://www.bwsd.k12.wi.us/middle/teachers/jcimino/SitePages/Home.aspx>.

Besides offering a demonstration of your choice, Clann members can help with food preparation and traffic direction during the school day, and with setup on the school grounds the preceding evening. Sleep in your own bed if you like, as Woodville is an hour or an hour and a half from the Twin Cities. Students begin visiting the encampment at 9:00 or 9:30 on Friday morning, with an hour for lunch at noon. We plan to close around 6 p.m., then tear down and head for home. Contact staff if you have questions, and please watch your e-mail for further information, such as times for loading and setup. And if you have any questions you think students would benefit from asking your character, please let staff know—Jake makes a list for them just in case they run out of ideas. Thanks!

Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games, Saturday, May 19

Mark your calendars! Saturday, May 19, Clann will be participating in the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games. Here's the website: http://www.mnscottishfair.org/.

We can camp Friday and Saturday nights, although the fair is at the Dakota County fairgrounds in Farmington, only about a half-hour drive from the center of the cities, so it's also very easy to day-trip. There are flush toilets and showers on the grounds and lots of free parking. This was a really great event for us over the years.

Clann Tartan Financial report for the year that ended 3-31-2012

It was a quieter than average year for the Regiment. The number of shows was down and participation was also down. This resulted in revenues under projection by $601 and expenses under budget by $5475. The big differences in expenses were in Camp equipment because the budgeted cannon purchase was not accomplished. The cannon maker has not yet completed the job. The purchase of the cannon has been extended for another year. Another big category of expense savings was in food for participants, where we had a surplus of 52% of the budgeted amount. Even with the savings, our soldiers and camp followers were still well fed but low participation numbers saved a lot of money. If you didn’t make it to events last year, someone else ate or drank your rations.

The year end surplus of revenue less expenses was $796. While this is only the second year with a surplus out of the past seven years, the two surplus years exceed the five deficit years for a net surplus over seven years of $520. The cash in the bank accounts at year end was $8120.

Board and Staff Minutes

Clann Tartan Board Meeting, March 20, 2012

Present were Bruce, David, Laura, Marty, Mary, Mia, Anthea, and members
Rachel and Julie.

The minutes were passed as corrected: Laura and David had been left off
the attendees for the previous meeting.

Treasurer's report: February was quiet. The Ramble check is in the
mail, and Fargo has paid. The insurance company is dropping us; Bruce
is looking for new insurance. One possibility is insurance through the
Living History organization, but there are some details to check.

Secretary's Report: We will not be able to identify the owner of the
Clann Tartan page, but are going to continue for now with the present
Facebook configuration.

Quartermaster: no report.

Camp and Company reps: no report.

Guilds: Music group is singing.

Dance needs new space; David knows of a rec center.

Mary's name is to come off the contact list for Dance, since she has not
been able to atstend.

Julie suggested we try to keep the Church for fourth Tuesday dance,
since the rec center is not available for that.

Mary and David have teazles; David suggested that he could make a holder
if Mia can get him a picture.

Sword: The Swordmaster would like to hear from members about when they
would like to do drill.

Events: Moorhead had 2,000 adults and 600 children. Our
representatives there were talking *all the time*.

Tartan Day: Anthea is trying to verify when we are lining up.

Woodville will be May 4th.

Tactical will be 22-24 of June.

Scottish Fair is to be 19th of May.

Mia is to get these dates and other known dates into the newsletter.

We discussed possible sites for Muster.  Everyone loves Jack's place;
Dun Gowan and Laurie's farm are other alternatives. The Captain will
ride out to look at Laurie's farm. The Muster committee is to meet.

Bruce sent a message to John O'Duggan to discuss buying his
partly-finished musket stock.

Staff is running an inventory on April First.

Pub Night: We are going to try Sporty's at Como and 22nd in April; near
where David lives. We had talked about meeting at 6:30 to beat the rush.

The garage: Marty managed to extract his key. The bottom panel of the
garage door has been replaced.

Mia is to get the address for Tuesday dance for Glenn.

Next Board meeting is April 17th at Mary's office.

In service,

Mia McDavid

Secretary.

Drill

As the good/better weather is showing itself a wee bit early this spring, I am announcing the start of drill.

In order to be the best at what we do, we need to practice.

Drill will include the proper and safe use of the pike, musket and mortar.

We need to be able to work as a single unit, but I will work with smaller groups as needed. And, we will need to be able to combine the groups into a single formation at events.

Everyone needs to know what is going on with each piece of equipment, so they can interpret, while the public drills are in progress.

I am scheduling the first drill for April 21, 2012, 10:00am. Location: 709 E. Minnehaha, St.Paul

If this is not a good time for you, please let me know and I will see what I can schedule.

Event Schedule:

Hello all,

The following is a list of the dates of the events that are currently on the schedule for this year. The staff has met and decided to keep this running list of events in the newsletter to give you a chance to get an idea of what is going on this season as well as keep you updated to changes in the schedule.

The column titled status will include the following information.

Tentative- this means that an event organizer or Clann has expressed a strong enough interest in doing this event that it warrants reserving space on the calendar for the event.

Pending- this is the next stage of an event. This means that the Contracts Administrator has entered serious discussion about Clann doing an event but we are still not committed to the event. You should however if possible think about whether or not you may be able to attend this event.

Scheduled- this level means that the board and staff have approve the event and we are committed to providing manpower to making the event happen. When an event is assigned this level please let the HCF know as soon as possible if you can or can not attend this event.

Canceled- This means that for various reasons an scheduled event has been removed from the current season. We will try and give as much notice as we can prior to canceling an event.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact staff regarding this matter

Thanks,
Your Staff
