ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Big Island Rendezvous and the Mankato History Fair

When you canít make it to two in a row, it can be difficult to choose between the final outdoor events of the Clann Tartan season. If you can make it to two in a row, the first half of October 2012 will be your cup of tea. The Big Island Rendezvous in Albert Lea, on October 4-7, draws a large public, and features many and varied re-enactment groups, not to mention the vendors catering to them and to the interested public, plus entertainers. "Home-grown" is a good way to describe the History Festival, held on October 7-10 in rural Mankato. Owing to changes at both events for 2012, Big Island (as Mia observes) needs less of us, but Mankato needs more.

The Big Island Rendezvous, http://www.bigislandfestivalandbbq.org/, opens with school days on Thursday and Friday and concludes with public days on Saturday and Sunday. The Rendezvous is said to be shifting its emphasis specifically to Minnesota's past; as a result, Gaffneyis will have fewer responsibilities than in past years, potentially giving participants more opportunity than heretofore to take in the rest of the rendezvous. Only four stations are required of our group during the two school days, although multiple members will be needed to direct traffic, assist with meals, and give the principal demonstrators a break. We will set up the camp Wednesday, October 3, in the afternoon and evening.

School days have proved so popular at Jack McGowan's History Festival, that he has added another to the schedule for 2012. The History Festival opens with the new school day on Wednesday and closes with a public day on Saturday. It's a charming event laid out in a big open field with woods all around, a pretty riverfront, enough birds of prey that people are cautioned not to bring small pets, a new (modern) structure of some sort every few years, and an enthusiastic staff. We set our own schedule for all four days of the History Festival and handle groups and families arriving in camp ad libitum. All sorts of demonstrations and general hands-on help are both welcome. We will set up camp the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, October 9.

Please watch your email for information on the arrangements for both events, and of course ask questions of staff and board at any time.

Fall Membership Meeting and Staff elections — November 3

The August members meeting is scheduled for Saturday Novmber 3 at 11 AM at Bruce and Julie's home, 4736 12th Av South in Minneapolis. We will be electing a Chief of Staff and choosing new junior staff.

Furthermore, we can expect some serious discussion about the future of our organization. One of our most senior members has set that meeting as a deadline for a discussion of where we are going.

Board and Staff Minutes

Minutes of the Clann Tartan Board Meeting, August 22, 2012

Present were Bruce, Karen, Mary,
Marty, Anthea and Mia.

The July minutes were accepted as presented.

VP: Flyers pending comment. David sent out an email; Mary needs a copy
of that email to edit the flyers.

Treasurer: In July expenses for Ft. William and Tactical were
registered. Income for Ft. William was registered in June. There was
also expense for repairs to Dun Gowan, and our insurance coverage needs
to be adjusted.

Secretary: No report.

The Quartermaster send in a request for an email on what repairs were
done at the repair party; Marty will do this. He will see Don Chesney
at Pine city and ask about the musket with the serpentine repair. Mary
has repaired and reinforced the Ensign and made four new gun socks.

Reps had nothing to report.

We had Music Guild in August and will have it in September; we can't in
October.

We need to make sure the Newsletter reflects the cancellation of
Wednesday Dance.

Fiber guild had nothing to report.

Sword guild: Marty checking with GPS about drill space.

Mary and Margaret are thinking of re-starting the recorder guild, maybe
on Mondays.

Upcoming events are Hudson, Big Island, and Mankato.

Old Business: Marty will be seeing Don this weekend and will ask about
that musket.

Muster did not happen as nobody signed up.

New Business:

Anthea has asked to be relieved of her responsibilities as Camp Rep.
Mary will take those over and cease splitting the company rep duties
with Laura. Laura's schedule now permits her to attend meetings.

The November members' meeting will be November 3 at 11:00 AM at Yoders.

The Scottish Fair will be first Saturday in May next year.

We need to write up Staff Elections for the newsletter.

The lamented Tent 7 is irretrievably mildewed; the Board voted to
discard it.

The next meeting will be in Mary's office September 18th AT 7:00.

Respectfully submitted,

Mia McDavid
Secretary

Guilds

Sword Guild:

Come out and learn the ways of Highland defense.

Join the Sword Guild and feel the raw power of the sword.

If you are interested, contact Marty Byers (Email orthodoxdruid@gmail.com), with days of the week and times that work for you. I will then get back to you.

Music

We will sing and play music of many styles and places from our period. Bring your voice and/or your instrument(s). Neither need be period correct.

The Yoders have graciously offered to host music once a month. We will meet at their house at 4736 12th Ave S, Minneapolis, from 7 - 9pm the 1st Thursday of each month.

Note: The Music Guild will not meet on Thursday, October 4, because that date conflicts with the Big Island show.

To contact the Yoders, call 612-825-4519 or email to Julieyoder at juno dot com.

To contact your Music Chair, call David at 612-353-1237 or email to baethan1630 at yahoo dot com

Thanks, and I look forward to making some noise with y'all!

David

We have a yahoo groups email list for the guild that we use for reminders about the meetings and topical discussions. If you want to be on the email list, request an invitation to join from Bruce at bruceyoder at juno dot com.

Dance

The Dance Guild gathers weekly from 7PM-9PM to learn and practice historic Scottish country dances.

1st & 3rd Wednesdays

Because the Lake Hiawatha Neighborhood Center is closed, Dance Guild will not meet on Wednesdays during the summer.

2nd & 4th Tuesdays

Saint Christopher's Episcopal Church, 2300 N Hamline Ave. in Roseville.

It is at the northeast corner of Highway 36 and Hamline Avenue (Hamline is between Snelling and Lexington). The church is actually encircled by the highway entrance ramp. You may have heard of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Think of this as St. Christopher's-in-the-Cloverleaf :-)>

Dance group will not meet on Tuesday, October 9, because that evening will be the set-up for the Mankato show.

Because of poor attendance in the first half of the year, Dance Guild will not meet on Wednesdays until further notice.

For more information call:

Julie at 612-825-4519.

We have a yahoo groups email list for the guild that we use for reminders about the meetings and topical discussions. If you want to be on the email list, request an invitation to join from Bruce at bruceyoder at juno dot com.

Fiber Guild

Those who would like instruction, inspiration, or just to come out and play should contact Mia McDavid, 651-490-1842. email miamcdavid at gmail dot com .

Historic Site

Clann Tartan has our own historic site near Duluth MN. Dun Gowan is an ongoing project, which is the site of Gaffneyis Annual Tactical in June. We are finishing the fort and beginning the construction of a village this year. Contact David Vavreck at 612-353-1237 or baethan1630 at yahoo dot com for further information, or to volunteer to help.

Calendar of Events

Be sure to contact your staff if you plan on attending a show event. Try to give at least a ten day notice when possible. This allows proper planning for the feeding of our members, and in some cases is required by event organizers to allow entry as a participant.

You can call any of the staff members listed, or send an email to staff at clanntartan.org.

Event Schedule:

Hello all,

The following is a list of the dates of the events that are currently on the schedule for this year. The staff has met and decided to keep this running list of events in the newsletter to give you a chance to get an idea of what is going on this season as well as keep you updated to changes in the schedule.

The column titled status will include the following information.

Tentative- this means that an event organizer or Clann has expressed a strong enough interest in doing this event that it warrants reserving space on the calendar for the event.

Pending- this is the next stage of an event. This means that the Contracts Administrator has entered serious discussion about Clann doing an event but we are still not committed to the event. You should however if possible think about whether or not you may be able to attend this event.

Scheduled- this level means that the board and staff have approve the event and we are committed to providing manpower to making the event happen. When an event is assigned this level please let the HCF know as soon as possible if you can or can not attend this event.

Canceled- This means that for various reasons an scheduled event has been removed from the current season. We will try and give as much notice as we can prior to canceling an event.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact staff regarding this matter

Thanks,
Your Staff
