ANNOUNCEMENTS

Big Island Rendezvous

We will be back at Big Island Rendezvous in Albert Lea for this years’ show! This is a wonderful show in which we get to spend 2 full days educating school children about Scottish history as well as the general public on the weekend days. This is a very busy event for us and since many hands make light work, we would love it if you could join us! This is a much loved event for several of our members and a good chance to catch up with the friends you only see during rendezvous. There is a lot of entertainment and it’s always a good time--rain, shine or snow!

Following tradition, we will be setting up the camp the preceding weekend, on the afternoon of Saturday, September 29.

Mankato History Fest

History Fest—for some members, this show is the highlight of their year! With three days of school children, a public day on Saturday, a beautiful, fun site, this really is not a show to miss unless you have to. At this show, we set our own schedule, and because of the more free-spirited style of this show, we have been known to have an absolute crush of people, especially when the weather is nice—so we would love to have you join us, as well!

The days are Wednesday, October 9 to Saturday, October 12, 2013. It’s definitely also a scenic enough drive to be worth coming down to day trip if you can only make one school day. Additional information directly from the event is available at http://www.historyfest.com/.

Memebers' Meeting and Staff Elections

The August Members Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, November 2nd at 11 AM at Bruce and Julie's home, 4736 12th Ave South in Minneapolis.  We will be electing a Captain and a Head Camp Follower and choosing new junior staff.

As always, there will be plenty to discuss. If you have items for the meeting agenda, please let your Board know.

Let's get to work!

We may have one more work weekend at the Dun Gowan historical site: If weather permits we will can work there on October 19 and 20. If you are interested in participating for work weekends, please let the membership know. Also, if you would like to participate but need a ride or plan to participate and would like a rider, please let the membership know!

Wanted!

Submissions for the Newsletter!

Items you can submit include research articles, character sketches, and other items pertaining to living history and Scottish Culture. Email your items in either plain text, or MS Word format to newsletter at clanntartan.org or snail mail to our postal address.

Items must be received by the 15th of each month to be considered for inclusion for the upcoming months issue. Mailed submissions will not be returned unless requested. All pertinent submissions will be considered as space permits. All research articles must reference at least three sources. Submissions may be broken in multiple parts.

Deadline for articles to go in the November newsletter will be October 15.


Board Minutes

Board Meeting, July 16, 2013

In attendance:

Board members present: President: Marty Byers, Vice President: Karen Bastien,
Secretary: Betsy Bolton, Treasurer: Bruce Yoder, Quartermaster: Mike McCarty,
Company Rep: David Vavreck; Also in attendance: Contract Rep: Mia McDavid


I)  Minutes: Approved as amended.

II) Reports:

a) Vice President: No report.

b) Treasurer: Presented the financial report. There were big expenses that have
been paid out, so there is a deficit at the time being, but that is because of
the annual expenses that have been paid.

c) Secretary: Verified the location for the August member’s meeting. Also need
to do Welcome Cards still. Roster also still requires updating.

d) Quartermaster: Some additional adjustments to the lathe Mike is using are
necessary to do the work that is required on the hail shot.

e) Camp Rep: Nothing to report.

f) Company Rep: Nothing to report.

III) Guild Reports:

a) Music: It’s meeting once a month--no meeting in July due to the July 4
holiday.

b) Dance: Is twice a month and had enough last time to do a dance for 8. They
saw Lukas.

c) Fiber: Nothing to report

d) Sword: Nothing to report. Most interest is at the shows.

e) Historic Site: There are some additional work weekends coming up. Still
searching for floorboards for the house. David is waiting for a quote from a
specialist who takes down old barns for functional wood. Also waiting on a quote
for historically correct nails for us.

IV) Events:

a) Fort William: There have been some issues, but they are being worked through
by the contingent that will be attending the show.

b) Second Muster: Dates are July 13 and 14. Muster committee should meet. A
cockade was earned (see below) and a prospective member was also in attendance.

c) Irish Fair: There has not been contact, so the assumption at this time is
that it is not going to happen. At least not this year.

d) Big Island: We are a go for five stations.

e) Mankato: Also still on.

V) Old Business:

a) Cannon: no change

b) Flag Silk: no change

c) Copper basin. completed and returned to Mike.

d) Wooden buckets: returned to Mike.

e) Cauldron: purchase will be turned on to Mike.

VI) New Business:

a) The idea of embroidering the names of who each memorial ribbon is for was
raised again.

b) Don and Marty talked. Tactical 2014 is the weekend of June 21.

c) Congratulations to Anne for earning her cockade!

d) Some items on the quizzes are problematic and need to be updated by the
Muster Committee.

e) Can we compile additional purchases for members of powder with our larger
purchase each year? Perhaps. Also discussed compiling a list of resources for
members who are looking to purchase powder.

f) Committee for Communication did meet, it seemed to go well. It will be a long
term work in process.

g) Anthea will not be running or accept the nomination to Head Camp Follower
this year.

Camp Rep: Laura Swenson. Also in attendance: Contract Rep: Mia McDavid


I)  Minutes: Approved as amended.

II) Reports:

a) Vice President: No report.

b) Treasurer: Presented at the Members’ Meeting.

c) Secretary: Need to do Welcome Cards still. Roster updates need to be
verified. November meeting is set for Yoders’. Time is set at 11 am. Also needs
to be updated in the CT calendar. Members’ Meeting should at least be reported,
but technical meeting minutes were not required.

d) Quartermaster: An inventory was completed. Tent 5 is missing as unaccounted
for. Marty also has 4 practice swords in his possession. The tensioners and
ropes for the tents were also wound wet and need to be bleached and dried. The
wooden buckets have been sealed with beeswax and pine pitch. This was just the
equipment at the garage--not the library. A discussion about the library was
raised--the Monroe hardcover book is missing. There was a copy that was
paperback. Some sections of the library are housed with Yoders, most is with
Margaret. The question of a tracking system was raised by the secretary. She
will price out the amount it would cost for the low-tech version (although it
would be easier if she had an idea of how many items were housed there). Adding
book reviews from members of library items would be nice for the newsletter.
Wash basin has been turned in.

e) Camp Rep: There is an issue that she is working to address.

f) Company Rep: No report (not present).

III) Guild Reports:

a) Music: Meeting the first Wednesday in September. No meeting in October
because of Big Island.

b) Dance: Waiting to hear about the space in the church. The price for rental of
the space is a bit high given normal turnout numbers. Outside is another option.

c) Fiber: Nothing to report

d) Sword: Nothing to report. Most interest is at events. Looking to get skits
ready earlier for Ramble and Farmington.

e) Historic Site: They are under a heat advisory. There are some work weekends
coming up still, too.

IV) Events:

a) Big Island: We are a go for five stations.

b) Mankato: Also still on.

c) Tactical: The idea that the show was boycotted was raised. Marty and Don had
a conversation at Muster, discussed membership numbers and the next date was set
for June 21, 2014.

d) Irish Fair: Was discussed.

V) Old Business:

a) Flag Silk: no change

b) Cauldron: The copper cauldron had the price for tinning doubled. The vendor
will be taking it with her to Turkey to have it tinned and will be back mid to
late October.

c) Muster committee needs to meet to update the quizzes.

d) Group gunpowder purchases: There may be a rule against ordering for a group.
There was a statement to that effect at the end of the release. Do they have
information on their website (FAQ?) about purchases by something like shooting
clubs.

VI) New Business:

Guilds

Sword Guild:

Come out and learn the ways of Highland defense.

Join the Sword Guild and feel the raw power of the sword.

Music

We will sing and play music of many styles and places from our period. Bring your voice and/or your instrument(s). Neither need be period correct.

The Yoders have graciously offered to host music once a month. We will meet at their house at 4736 12th Ave S, Minneapolis, from 7 - 9pm the 1st Thursday of each month.

Dance

The Dance Guild gathers twice a month from 7PM-9PM to learn and practice historic Scottish country dances.

2nd and 4th Tuesdays

Historic Site

Clann Tartan has our own historic site near Duluth MN. Dun Gowan is an ongoing project, which is the site of Gaffneyis Annual Tactical in June. We are finishing the fort and beginning the construction of a village this year. The work weekends for this year will be May 18 & 19 (weather permitting), June 1 and 2, June 29 and 30, September 7 and 8 with October 19 and 20 being our last weekend to work (weather permitting).Contact David Vavreck at 612-353-1237 or baethan1630 at yahoo dot com for further information, or to volunteer to help.

Calendar of Events

Be sure to contact your staff if you plan on attending a show event. Try to give at least a ten day notice when possible. This allows proper planning for the feeding of our members, and in some cases is required by event organizers to allow entry as a participant.

Event Schedule:

Hello all,

The following is a list of the dates of the events that are currently on the schedule for this year. The staff has met and decided to keep this running list of events in the newsletter to give you a chance to get an idea of what is going on this season as well as keep you updated to changes in the schedule.

The column titled status will include the following information.

Tentative- this means that an event organizer or Clann has expressed a strong enough interest in doing this event that it warrants reserving space on the calendar for the event.

Pending- this is the next stage of an event. This means that the Contracts Administrator has entered serious discussion about Clann doing an event but we are still not committed to the event. You should however if possible think about whether or not you may be able to attend this event.

Scheduled- this level means that the board and staff have approve the event and we are committed to providing manpower to making the event happen. When an event is assigned this level please let the HCF know as soon as possible if you can or can not attend this event.

Canceled- This means that for various reasons an scheduled event has been removed from the current season. We will try and give as much notice as we can prior to canceling an event.

Event Maps and Directions

Big Island Rendezvous, October 3-6

We are allowed to set up the weekend before the event; please check Staff announcements for Corporate setup time.

For a fee you will be able to park at the private residence on the road to the park entrance. Free participant parking is available at Snyder field (not the athletic field, but a lot on the North side of the high school.). Shuttles run from the parking area to the park on a regular schedule. Shuttles run to shower facilities at high school. Showers are free for show participants. Personal vehicles are prohibited from event grounds during show hours.

Location

Big Island Rendezvous is located in Albert Lea, MN - just off Interstate 35 about 98 miles south of the Twin Cities.

Drive Time

Allow about 2 hours from the Twin Cities.

Directions

From Minneapolis or Saint Paul, take I35 South to I90 in Albert Lea.
Take I90 West to the 90 west take exit 157 (one mile)
Turn Left and head South on Bridge Avenue to Hammer Road (about 1 mile).
Turn Right and head East on Hammer Road to the park entrance.
You will be able to drive on-site before and after show hours. Our camp will be located inside the park area.

Directions

From the Twin Cities, follow 169 through Mankato.
Left at the Hillcrest Health Care Center ( if you go past the flashing lights at Co Road 68 you've gone too far);
Left onto Shamrock Lane, which is the second left after crossing the Blue Earth River;
follow this to its end (Jack McGowan's on the map)
