For an excellent account of the life of Alasdair MacColla see Highland Warrior. He was second-in-command to the Marquis of Montrose in the Royalist campaign of 1644-1645, a couple events of which the song mentions. Their army sacked Aberdeen in September 1644 and occupied Glasgow in August of 1645. The song seems to regret those events even though Mac Colla is its hero. The recollection of history may be confused here.
